Product data, standards and what we do not claim

Everything on this page comes from the published technical data sheet for each model. Where a figure has been verified by laboratory test, it says so. Where nothing has been certified, this page says that too, because a specification section written on a claim we cannot support is a specification section that gets struck out.

Standards this product is designed to work with

These are the standards a designer applies to the lavatory and to the room. They are listed here so a specifier can see that we know which document governs the installation, not to suggest that a step stool is certified under them.

  • 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, section 606 governs lavatory rim height and knee and toe clearance. Klimbo units support lavatories designed per section 606; they do not replace any required clearance and they are not a substitute for an accessible fixture.
  • 2010 ADA Standards, section 305 governs the 760 mm x 1220 mm (30 in. x 48 in.) clear floor space. See the clearance note below.
  • CSA B651, Accessible design for the built environment is the Canadian reference a designer applies to the same washroom.

Clearance note, for the design consultant

A step stool placed in front of a lavatory can affect the clear floor space that makes that lavatory accessible. Klimbo units are retractable: the tread folds back on its own after each use, so nothing is left standing in the circulation path and nothing has to be moved by a caregiver or by maintenance staff. That is the point of the product, and it is the difference between an integrated fixture and a loose stool.

Where lavatories are provided, 2010 ADA Standards 213.3.4 requires at least one to comply with 606, and 606.2 requires that lavatory to have a clear floor space for a forward approach and knee and toe clearance complying with 306. A K01 stands 609.6 mm (24 in.) tall retracted and sits under the counter. So do not install a Klimbo unit at the lavatory that serves as the required accessible lavatory: place the units at the other lavatories in the room and leave the accessible one clear.

At those other lavatories, confirm on the drawing, not on site, that the unit and its projection of 279 mm (11 in.) from the counter, step lowered, do not encroach on a required clear floor or manoeuvring space.

What we do not claim

No step stool is "ADA compliant". The ADA does not address step stools at all, and compliance is a property of the installation, not of a product. Any supplier who tells you otherwise is selling you a problem. Klimbo has not obtained certification under ADA, CSA B651, UL or cULus, and this page does not claim any. Load capacity is verified by laboratory test, which is a test result, not a certification.

Documents for your specification

Three-part specification sections, in Word and PDF, plus technical data sheets, CAD and Revit files. The brand-neutral version is written entirely in performance terms, so it can be inserted into a public tender without a brand-name justification and without restricting competition.
