Museum restroom design for families with a retractable step stool for young visitors

Museum Restroom Design for Families and Young Visitors

October 23, 2026

Museum restroom design has to serve an audience that changes every hour: a school group in the morning, families on the weekend, seniors on a guided tour. Of all these visitors, young children are the ones the washroom most often forgets.

This article is for interior designers and architects planning or renovating washrooms in museums, science centres, galleries and heritage sites.

Why museum washrooms are different

  • Peaks, not flow. A whole school group arrives at once, often right after the bus or before lunch.
  • Families stay for hours. A child will wash their hands several times during a visit, often after touching interactive exhibits.
  • Heritage constraints. In older buildings, moving plumbing or lowering a counter can be costly or not allowed.

Museum restroom design: the sink is the bottleneck

During a school visit, the line often forms at the sinks. When children cannot reach the faucet, each one needs an adult to lift them, and the washroom slows down.

A retractable step anchored to the floor under one or two sinks of the row lets children aged 2 to 8 wash on their own. They pull the step out with a foot, step up, and the step folds back after use. The counter keeps its height for adults, and the installation does not touch the plumbing, which matters in a heritage building.

Plan for groups as well as families

  • Equip more than one sink in the washrooms closest to the education rooms and the group entrance, and leave the accessible sink free.
  • Keep a family washroom where a parent can come in with children of either sex.
  • Place soap and drying within reach of a child standing on the step.
  • Signal the step: Klimbo units come with signage so children and parents know the step is there.

Design and durability

Museums care about the look of their spaces. The Klimbo K01 has clean architectural lines and is available, on special order and for a surcharge, in the 190 classic RAL colors and Axalta metallic finishes, so the step can match a dark stone counter or a bright family gallery. The standard color is RAL 7047 Telegrey. The K01 and K02 support 370 kg (815 lb), verified by laboratory testing, and they are built for daily cleaning in public use.

Frequently asked questions

Can a step be added during a museum renovation without moving the sink?

Yes. The K01 and K02 anchor to the concrete slab in front of an existing sink, in about 15 minutes, without plumbing work.

How many sinks should have a step?

One per row is the usual starting point. In washrooms used by school groups, two sinks shorten the line.

What if the floor cannot be drilled?

The K03 is a removable stair, not anchored to the floor. It suits spaces where drilling is not an option.
