Child friendly restroom design for interior designers

A family friendly restroom starts with a sink that a child aged 2 to 8 can reach. A Klimbo retractable step stool, anchored to the floor in front of a standard lavatory, gives a child that universal access without a second basin or a lowered counter. The child pulls the tread out with a foot, steps up, and the tread folds back into the unit after use.

What makes a restroom child friendly without redrawing the sink run?

A child friendly restroom lets a child of 2 to 8 wash their hands at the same lavatory as an adult. The usual answers are a lowered basin or a second, smaller basin, and each one costs the room something: comfort for adults along a shared run, or an extra fixture to buy, plumb and clean.

A retractable step stool changes neither the counter height nor the basin count, and no plumbing work is needed. The child climbs up to the lavatory that is already installed. The table below lists the three models and where each one is used.

The load capacity of every model is verified by laboratory test. Parents describe the problem from their side in our article on family friendly restrooms.

How do you make a standard sink work for a four year old without adding a fixture?

The child pulls the tread out from the base of the unit with a foot, steps up to reach the rim and the tap, then steps back down. The tread folds back into the unit once the weight comes off it.

One lavatory in a cinema lobby, a museum or an airport concourse then serves an adult at one moment and a child of four the next. There is no second basin beside it and no counter dropped along the whole run.

Does it fit a design concept, in colour, finish and millwork?

The standard finish is RAL 7047 Telegrey, included in the list price. A project with a different palette can order any of 190 RAL classic colours or an Axalta metallic finish as a priced special order, and the unit can carry the owner's mark.

The K01 is 609.6 mm (24 in.) tall when retracted and 358.1 mm (14.1 in.) wide. With the tread lowered it projects 279.4 mm (11 in.) from the counter, a dimension to reserve on the plan in front of the vanity. The K02 is 483 mm (19 in.) tall when retracted, 334 mm (13.75 in.) wide, and projects 279 mm (11 in.). Check both the retracted size and the lowered projection on your millwork drawing before the cabinetry is built.

How does it hold up under cleaning and heavy foot traffic?

The K01 body is T6061 aluminum finished in Axalta polyester powder coat, with a non slip strip made from recycled tire rubber, and it weighs 9 kg (20 lb). The K02 body is 1018 steel with an epoxy primer under the same powder coat, and it weighs 10 kg (22 lb). Both are verified by laboratory test to 370 kg (815 lb).

On the K01, the hardware is stainless 18-8 as standard, upgraded to 316 stainless as a special order for chlorinated environments. The K01 carries a warranty of five years, mechanism included. The K02 carries a warranty of three years. The K03, in aluminum with a recycled rubber surface, is verified by laboratory test to 410 kg (900 lb) and carries a warranty of three years. It needs no anchor and can move with a tenant fit out.

Where does a unit go on the plan?

Draw it at one lavatory of a row of two or more.

Read the retracted height and the lowered projection of each model on its data sheet, and check them on the drawing, not on site. The K03 is the option when the floor cannot be drilled.

What do you hand the architect for the specification?

Section 10 28 13, Toilet Accessories, under the parent section 10 28 00. Three formats are ready to paste into a project manual: a brand neutral version written entirely in performance terms for a public tender, a version naming Klimbo as basis of design with an or equal article, and a named single model version once a model is fixed. Technical data sheets, CAD drawings and Revit families sit on the same page, with no form to fill.

Add the lavatory count and the room type to your quote request. The full set lives on our page for architects and specifiers.

Frequently asked questions from interior designers

What does a child friendly restroom need at the sink?

A way for a child aged 2 to 8 to reach the lavatory that adults also use. A retractable step stool anchored to the floor provides it without a second basin, a lowered counter or any change to the plumbing. The tread folds back into the unit after each use.

Can the specification be used in a public tender without naming a brand?

Yes. The brand neutral version of section 10 28 13 is written entirely in performance terms, with no manufacturer or trade name in the text. Any product that meets the performance requirements stated in the section is acceptable under that version.

What load has each model been tested to?

The load capacity is verified by laboratory test: 370 kg (815 lb) for the K01 and the K02, and 410 kg (900 lb) for the K03.

Can it be installed near a pool or another chlorinated environment?

Yes. On the K01, 316 stainless hardware is ordered as a special option in place of the standard 18-8 stainless. The K01 body is T6061 aluminum with an Axalta powder coat.

What colours are available beyond the standard finish?

The standard finish, included in the list price, is RAL 7047 Telegrey. As a priced special order, all three models can be finished in any of 190 RAL classic colours or an Axalta metallic finish, and the unit can carry the owner's mark.

What is the difference between the K01, K02 and K03?

The K01 and K02 anchor to a concrete slab and stay in place once installed. The K01 is the taller model, with a warranty of five years that covers the mechanism, built for heavy traffic and chlorinated environments. The K02 suits community and hospitality settings at a lower price, with a warranty of three years. The K03 is removable, needs no anchor, and can be repositioned or taken along at the end of a lease.

Can a project order one or two units directly?

Yes. One or two units can be ordered on the klimbo.co online shop at the list price in Canadian dollars: $1,879.98 for the K01, $969.99 for the K02 and $678.99 for the K03. A multi building project or an institutional purchase goes through a written quote, which confirms the price, the shipping and the anchor detail for each room.

What does Klimbo provide to the architect of record?

A one page specification section in three formats, technical data sheets for each model, CAD drawings and Revit families, all available without a form on the page for architects and specifiers.
